Nick and Charlie

Alice Oseman

Review ★★★★★

This novella from the Heartstopper Osemanverse feels like the perfect capstone to the Heartstopper story. Unsurprisingly, the story focuses on the protagonists Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring from Heartstopper. The plot of this this book revolves around the relationship status of the titular characters as Nick prepares to leave for college, leaving Charlie behind in their hometown. Familiar characters from Heartstopper are present throughout the story, and they help guide the plot.

For Alice Oseman fans who have only read the Heartstopper comics, it will be a novel (pun intended), but pleasant experience to read about beloved characters via prose rather than illustration. Even so, the book features a handful of Oseman's wonderful signature illustrations sprinkled throughout. This is a short and sweet feel-good story. This is an excellent recommendation for fans of Oseman's other work or anyone who likes a warm fuzzy feeling.

Given this work is shorter than others in the author's catalog, it has only about one clear rising and falling action, as the story is written as a novella. The story is a little simpler than other entries in the Heartstopper timeline, but it fits right in nonetheless.

Note: At the time or writing, the release of Heartstopper Volume 6 is pending. This review refers to the novella as a capstone to the Heartstopper series as it clearly takes place after the events of Heartstopper Volume 5. It remains unclear where Heartstopper Volume 6 will fit into the story's chronology. An update for this review will be published upon the release of Heartstopper Volume 6.
